Just curious.....what three Christian books would you recommend that everyone read?
You can list the Bible as #1 or you can list three and we will just assume that the Bible is really #1 for you.
(Yes, this is a cheesy attempt to catalog some possible reading material. Perhaps others might benefit as well)
I'll start
ReplyDelete1.Bible
2.The Jesus I Never Knew by Philip Yancey
3.Practicing His Presence (writings of Brother Lawrence and Frank Laubach)
The Bible is #1, obviously. Three more would be:
ReplyDelete1. Manual of Church Order by J. L. Dagg
2. The Autobiography of Elder Wilson Thompson
3. Hymns of Our Faith by William J. Reynolds
[It's hard to pick 3, but this is the 3 for today. Dagg is considered by many to be the Baptists first systematic theologian. Thompson was a preacher on the western frontier before and after the "missionary/anti-missionary" split of the 1830s. He took the "anti-missionary" side, but it is obvious he was highly in favor of preaching the gospel. Has some really interesting real life stories. Hymns of Our Faith is a little dated. Reynolds, who died this year, wrote this as a companion to the (Southern) Baptist Hymnal. It has some very good information and stories about many of the hymns and tunes sung by Baptists.]
Crazy Love by Francis Chan
ReplyDeleteOrdering Your Private World by Gordon McDonald
Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado
and of course the King James Only Version of the Bible is my real Numero Uno!
There are many others but these three are must reads for, not only every preacher, EVERY person who claims to be a Christian!
Thanks Bro. Robert....Is the Thompson book out of print?
ReplyDeleteBig J, I have read two of the three, but "Crazy Love??" Is that something about Woodstock? :)
In all sincerity it is one of the most thought provoking challenging pieces of work out. It is just starting to catch steam but soon it will be as big or bigger than purpose driven life. It is very challenging!
ReplyDeleteThe Thompson book is still available from the Baptist Bible Hour bookstore. The Reynolds book is out of print.
ReplyDeleteBro. Reese's story about the "WWF" reminded me of something I read on Thompson once. Don't know if I remember it exactly. It was said that on some occasion someone had a gun pointed on him. The guy was going to rob him I think. Thompson told him that he wouldn't give him anything or maybe something like that, and then said that if God had given him the job of shooting him he'd better go ahead and pull the trigger. The man looked at him funny, looked at his gun, threw the gun down and ran off!
1. How Now Shall We Live? by Chuck Colson & Nancy Pearcy
ReplyDelete2. What's So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey
3. Finally Alive. by John Piper
The Bible.
ReplyDeleteCharles Spurgeon's devotional Bible (for the devotions, of course.)
