We know he did not know at that time he spoke the words that only the Father knew. He has since ascended to Heaven. He obviously made himself in the fashion of a man lower than the angels when He came to earth, and neglected many of the privileges he had in Heaven. We know for a time, he gave up the communion with the Father "Why have You forsaken me?". We know for a time He gave up the ability to walk and talk, as He was a human baby (and most likely the knowledge that came therewith). We know while on earth, He often asked the Father for power to do things instead of having it on His own.
My theory is this. While on earth, He chose to give up certain attributes of Himself such as omnipotence, and omniscience. Whereas He was still God in His essence, His "make-up" if that is the right phrase, His eternal-hood, His righteousness, His holiness, and every other aspect. He was just God who chose to give up certain attributes. His character and quality remained the same. When He ascended into Heaven, I would just GUESS here that He took up every attribute again to deal with His people the way He did before. So that means He again took up His omnipotence and omniscience. Therefore, knowing all things, He does currently know when He will return.
Furthermore, to suggest his statement (which was in the present tense) applies to all times including today, would be to suggest nobody will ever know the day or hour he returns. This is, of course, ridiculous.
